Dr Jim Kerss

Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine

I consult with patients presenting with all types of musculoskeletal and sports injury, but particularly specialise in bone stress, ligament, muscle, meniscal injuries, tendon, back and joint pain in particular. I have a special interest in sports related concussion, and see sportspeople following acute concussive events to guide them through rehabilitation, and also those with persisting concussive symptoms. I often receive referrals for medical opinion, diagnostic work up and management for patients and athletes experiencing injury or health problems related to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).

I can see patients suffering from medical problems related to exercise including fatigue, underperformance and breathing issues, such as exercise induced asthma. I regularly perform diagnostic ultrasound in clinic, to aid diagnosis and explanation of a condition, plus perform ultrasound guided injections to help aid rehabilitation.

I am Head of Sports Medicine at the UK Sports Institute where I lead a team of Sports Physicians providing healthcare to Great Britain’s Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth athletes.

My previous positions include Team Physician at EF Education First-EasyPost professional cycling team from 2020 - 2024, Chief Medical Officer role at England Netball from 2016-2022, also previously British Para-Swimming and England Squash. I have also worked as a team doctor in Premiership football, professional rugby league and rugby union.

I worked as a Consultant in an NHS musculoskeletal clinic from 2017-2023.
