I'm a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in the care of patients with disorders of the shoulder. My special interests include the management of all shoulder conditions, particularly sporting injuries, degenerative conditions and painful shoulders in general.
I undertake arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for soft tissue tendon injuries, shoulder instability, impingement and numerous other painful or restrictive shoulder problems. I perform joint replacement surgery for shoulder arthritis and cartilage transplant/regenerative techniques for localised or early arthritis.
I have an advanced practice in the management of complex tendon injuries and irreparable tendon injuries.
I developed my expertise from holding UK shoulder fellowship posts at Stepping Hill Hospital, followed by an upper limb fellowship at the internationally renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit.
I work closely with interventional musculoskeletal radiologists to perform guided injections and therefore optimise the non-operative management of patients with shoulder conditions where surgery can be avoided.
In addition to my surgical qualifications, I have a BSc in Neuroscience and an MSc in Trauma Surgery. I lecture nationally and internationally on shoulder surgery and I'm involved in running national and international arthroscopic and arthroplasty (shoulder replacement) shoulder surgery courses. I'm passionate about teaching and training, and was honoured to be nominated by my trainees for a Health Education England School of Surgery Excellence in Education Award 2019-20.
My innovative, outcome-led practice is represented by my regular publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international meetings. I have an active interest in research and regularly publish in medical journals and was part of the team who were awarded the Ian Kelly Prize for research at BESS Dublin 2016.
In 2018, with Prof Chris Peach, I was awarded a GHP Private Healthcare Award for Best Sports Injury Therapy Specialists for North West England and in 2019 was awarded 'Leaders in Sports Injury Treatment 2019 – North West England'. My expertise in healthcare delivery has been recognised by Stepping Hill Hospital in granting me Clinical Excellence Award Points.
I developed my expertise from holding UK shoulder fellowship posts at Stepping Hill Hospital under the supervision of Mr Matt Ravenscroft and Mr Clive Warren-Smith, followed by an upper limb fellowship at the internationally renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit.
