I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. My practice is predominantly specialist knee surgery for both adults and children. I am actively involved with all aspects of knee trauma and I am a founder member of the Greater Manchester Specialist Knee Injury Network, which has been created to improve the management of complex knee injuries in the city.
My specialist knee practice covers all aspects of knee injuries and conditions, treatment and surgery (ligament, cartilage and meniscus). I also perform all types of knee replacement procedures including partial, total and revision knee replacement. I have a special interest in knee joint preservation surgery which includes osteotomy (realignment surgery) either alone or in conjunction with chondral (joint surface cartilage) restoration. I am part of the teaching faculty for the Northern Osteotomy Course which is an internationally recognised course for surgeon training.
I treat a number of local professional athletes from football, rugby league and union, cycling and taekwondo. I take referrals from local knee colleagues for help with the management of complex knee trauma and conditions.
I have performed the following numbers of soft tissue procedures: 4,000 knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), 600 ACL reconstructions, 18 ACL repairs, 50 revision ACL reconstructions, 50 other ligament reconstructions (PCL, MCL, LCL, PLC), 60 MPFL reconstruction (kneecap stabilisation), 180 meniscal repairs and two meniscal transplants.
With regard to knee joint preservation I have performed 135 osteotomy procedures and 30 major cartilage resurfacing procedures (ACI/MACI/OATS/MegaOATS) in addition to 200 microfracture procedures.
My joint replacement numbers are 1,300 total knee replacements, 190 unicompartmental knee replacements and 90 revision knee replacements.
I qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1990. I taught anatomy at Leeds University Medical School from 1991-1992. I moved to Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1992, where I completed my basic surgical training. Higher surgical training in orthopaedics was on the North West Rotation, undertaken at hospitals in and around Manchester from 1996-2001.
My fellowship year comprised of a six month arthroplasty fellowship at Wrightington Hospital and six months with distinguished knee specialist Dr John Bartlett in Melbourne, Australia.
