Dr Dunn is the first expert, and currently only, to have published a peer reviewed article on the Pre-signing Medical Examination which you can download here.
Here he explains what a medical involves, common injuries that are often detected, and the full pre-signing musculoskeletal imaging assessment we offer at the OrthTeam Centre:
Pre-signing medical
When a professional athlete transfers from one club to another they may undergo a “pre-signing” medical examination, of which imaging forms a major component. This assessment involves cardiorespiratory capacity testing, clinical examination of the musculoskeletal and cardio respiratory system, musculoskeletal imaging screening, usually MRI of lumbar spine, pelvis, hips, knee and ankles, plus cardiac screening with ECG and echocardiography.
Common injuries
The majority of pre-signing medicals detect minor degenerative changes and old minor injuries, which can be considered normal for a footballer, such as small degenerative tears in the labrum of the hip, degeneration of the pubic symphysis, old lateral ankle ligament tears and mild features of tendinopathy. A more concerning injury, that may influence the length of contract offered or jeopardise the signing, are large defects in the articular cartilage of the knees, unstable or large tears of the knee menisci or previous surgical repairs that show signs of failure.
Our service
At the OrthTeam Centre, we offer a full pre-signing musculoskeletal imaging assessment including MRI, ultrasound and X-ray as well as provision of clinical examination rooms. All pre-signing imaging is reported immediately by an experienced sports Radiologist with findings discussed with and sent to the referring clinician. ECG and cardiorespiratory testing is available at Spire Manchester hospital which is conveniently located next to our facility.
