International Women’s Week 2021: Arifa Rafiq

To mark International Women’s Day, we are celebrating our fantastic female colleagues at the OrthTeam Centre. Here we find out more about one of our Radiographer’s, Arifa Rafiq:

Arifa Rafiq

Why did you want to be a Radiographer?

The first time I was made aware of the profession, I was in year 10 and we had a school visit to The Christie. Upon further research, I was impressed with the way radiographer jobs were a combination of advanced technology and patient care. I think it was the futuristic looking scanners and the X-ray kit that initially caught my attention!

Conitinious learning and development is a key focus at the OrthTeam Centre – have you undertaken any recently?

I have not long completed my MRI training at the OrthTeam centre. This took a little longer than anticipated due to COVID, but we got there. In the near future, I’m hoping to further expand my skills and train in abdominal MRI – as at the OrthTeam Centre we specialise in MSK, neurosurgery and sports scans.

What do you enjoy most about working at the OrthTeam Centre and your role?

I really enjoy working at the OrthTeam Centre as the teams are quite small, so we often work alongside the professional bodies such as nurses, HCAs and consultants. The building is very sophisticated and is kitted out with the all the latest diagnostic equipment.

Also, the radiology team which I’m part of, is fantastic! There are some excellent radiographers with a lot of knowledge – which is great for me as I am constantly learning new things every day.

Which women inspire you?

This is a difficult question; I am constantly inspired by strong women. I would definitely say I’m most inspired by the women in my life such as my mother, friends and female colleagues.
