International Women’s Week 2021: Tessa Akinola
Why did you decide on a nursing career?
The initial attraction to nursing was being able to make a difference in people’s lives, which was very appealing to me. I enjoy a challenge and I wanted to provide a high standard of care to patients.
How long have you been in nursing?
I have been in nursing for 10 years this September. I trained at Sheffield Hallam University.
What attracted you to working at the OrthTeam Centre?
When I came to visit, after I had my interview, I knew it was the right place for me! On arrival, the atmosphere and working environment looked outstanding.
What is a typical day for you at the OrthTeam Centre?
My day is very varied; it consists of assisting the consultants with chaperoning, to wound care and helping with injections in ultrasound and fluoroscopy.
What do you enjoy most about working at the OrthTeam Centre?
I really enjoy working alongside such a supportive team, gaining more knowledge on orthopaedics and providing exceptional care to patients.
Which women inspire you?
My mum is inspirational, she is the definition of strong and independent. She has always pushed me to the limit and brings out the best in me. She is literally amazing!
What is your proudest achievement?
My proudest achievement is being a qualified nurse and being able to work throughout the Covid pandemic successfully under many pressures.
What do you like you do in your downtime/hobbies?
My passion is interior design, being able to recreate different looks and styles. I also enjoy a spa day every now and again too!
