OrthTeam leads the way in pioneering navigation-assisted surgery
This technique can be active, using robotics, or passive where the surgeon remains in total control, but computer software aids in the procedure (which can be pre-operatively and/or during surgery).
The main aim of CAN is to increase surgical accuracy and therefore minimise the need for revision surgery. Computer-assisted procedures make minimally invasive surgical solutions possible and enable the consultant to obtain information to determine exactly where he/she needs to make incisions before the surgery. Not only does this mean a less invasive treatment and less pain for patients, it also leads to more precision and generally a shorter time in surgery.
CAN is also being investigated for surgical procedures with limited visibility such as placement of the acetabular cup in total hip arthroplasty, resection of pelvic tumours, femoral neck fractures and tunnel alignment in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions.
CAN surgery provided by the OrthTeam includes:
- Virtual Implant Positioning (VIP) system - shoulder replacement surgery
- MAKO – hip and knee replacements (full and partial)
- ExactechGPS – CT guided shoulder replacement system (OrthTeam Shoulder and Elbow Consultants, Mr Chris Peach and Mr Nick Phillips, performed the first navigated shoulder replacement in the North West in 2016 using this system)
OrthTeam Shoulder Consultant, Mr Matt Ravenscroft, who is the first surgeon in the UK to offer the VIP system to patients, said: “I’m delighted to have introduced Virtual Implant Positioning for shoulder replacement surgery exclusively to Spire Manchester Hospital.
“This navigation system improves surgical accuracy, which means a gentler procedure and reduced pain for our patients, and generally a quicker recovery period with less chance of the need for revision surgery.”
The OrthTeam Centre brings world-class expertise and diagnostic technology together under-one-roof. The facility is a partnership with Spire Healthcare, and is conveniently located on the same site as Spire Manchester Hospital, which ensures easy access for people requiring inpatient, day case and other sub-specialist care.
