Elbow replacement surgery

What is it?

Your surgeon will advise elbow replacement surgery if you are suffering from arthritis or an injury in the elbow causing pain and restricted movement.

The elbow is a complex joint and there are a number of different types of elbow replacement surgeries to replace either part of or the entire elbow joint. Your surgeon will discuss with you which replacement would suit you best.

Diagnosis and treatment options

Your consultant will examine you and ask you to demonstrate certain movements to check how well your elbow is working.

You might need some additional tests:

  • X-ray
  • A CT scan
  • A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

A total elbow replacement involves replacing the elbow joint with an artificial one to resolve pain from the joint and restore movement and function.
