Sports Cardiology Service

What we offer between the OrthTeam Centre, and our partners, Spire Manchester Hospital:

  • Pre-participation cardiac evaluation to assess heart health before an athlete returns to an exercise.
  • Advice on undertaking exercise safely in people affected by heart disease.
  • Cardiovascular performance optimisation that includes strategies to enhance athletic performance.
  • Return-to-play evaluation to determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to sport after a cardiac event, or heart surgery.
  • Evaluation of exercise intolerance, or decreased athletic performance to identify underlying heart conditions that may affect performance.
  • Comprehensive cardiovascular screening and risk assessment to evaluate overall heart health and identify potential risk factors

Sports Cardiology Assessment

Professor Aneil Malhotra will undertake an initial consultation with an athlete to understand the level of heart risk during exercise/performance.

If diagnostics tests are required, these will be tailored to the individual athlete's needs and may include:

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) to check the rhythm of your heart.
  • Echocardiogram (echo) which is an ultrasound scan to check the structures of your heart.
  • Exercise stress test which checks how your heart works during physical activity.
  • Cardiac MRI, which is a more detailed evaluation of your heart’s structures. This can identify if there is scarring in the heart muscle.
  • Ambulatory ECG monitoring to assess the electrical tracing of the heart in your own environment at home and while playing sports.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions like arrhythmias and structural heart problems.
  • Support athletes with conditions that strain the heart, like diabetes, and sport and exercise hypertension.
